(…) Perhaps to begin with something simple: Gottfried Benn’s “Das Genieproblem”—one of my favourites. It’s premise is that there are no geniuses. After having read the text, one becomes aware that there are neither any artists. All is only convention. Following this, an engineer is always but an engineer. After Beuys, an artist is a shaman. And since Koons, a buffoon. I would not be tempted to call this a very clear cut job description. From this, it follows that you may no longer want to be an artist, but rather that you want to simply make things that we describe as art. And since the explanation “I produce the reification of thought” is too complex, you call yourself an artist. What then, in a philosophical sense, is the present problem? Identity as an artist … Identity as Frank? (…) More tomorrow.
